I combined my two loves to make these cilantro lime margaritas, cilantro and tequila. Kidding! Cilantro and lime will always be my favorite flavor combo. Now they’re together in an adult beverage that I can sip! It may be winter outside, but this tastes like summer in a glass.
So, this week my daughters had 3 consecutive “snow days” off from school with a great possibility of a fourth. So yesterday I made my self a drink. Two drinks, actually and I don’t regret it.
This drink was inspired because of my love for cilantro and lime. I could gave cilantro lime rice with my cilantro lime chicken and now, cilantro lime margaritas for all of eternity and I’d personally be okay with it.
Do I have an unhealthy obsession? Possibly.
Do I care? No.
Extra salt? Yes, please.
I really do love a good margarita. They go great with chips and salsa, nachos and friends.
I usually avoid ordering them at restaurants because typically a pre-made mix is used, which means they have a ton of calories. I get why the mix is necessary, they would need a lifetime supply of limes and someone whose sole job was to juice them. But did you know that you don’t need a mix to make a really good margarita?
To Make This Cilantro Lime Margarita You Will Need:
- lime juice
- a sweetener (agave or try my honey lime version)
- salt for the rim (optional)
To make this cilantro lime margarita version, throw in a small handful– it’s somewhere between 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup — into a cocktail shaker.
I did all of this in my cocktail shaker and not in my glass because I worried the cilantro might over power the drink a little and plus I didn’t want the leaves in my glass.
Then squeeze out about 1 cup of lime juice. That’s about 8 large and very juicy limes.
Then I used a muddle to gently smash the cilantro. If you don’t have a muddle, the end of a wooden spoon will work just fine.
Next add in about 1/4 cup or more (depending on how sweet you like your margs!) of agave syrup, stir or shake until combined.
If you want a salted rim, simply run a lime wedge around the edge of your glass(es) and invert the glass onto a plate of kosher salt.
Fill with ice, 1-1/2 to 2 ounces (or 3 to 4 tablespoons) of tequila and divide the cilantro lime mixture among the two glasses.
Pop in a couple of extra lime wedges and a sprig of cilantro for garnish if you want and then serve and sip!
The cilantro really adds an earthy herbaceous flavor that is subtle yet delicious! If you’re a cilantro lime fan like I am, then these cilantro lime margaritas will be your jam.

Cilantro Lime Margaritas
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves with stems
- 1 cup fresh lime juice, about 8 large and juicy limes
- 1/4 cup agave syrup, more or less to taste
- 4 ounces tequila silver, more or less to taste
- Place cilantro into a cocktail shaker or large glass. Add in the lime juice and muddle until the cilantro is bruised. Pour in the agave and shake or stir until combined.
- Rub the rim of the glass with lime and then dip the rim into a plate of kosher salt.
- Fill glasses with ice and desired amount of tequilla (I use about 3-4 tablespoons or 1½ to 2 ounces). Then divide the cilantro lime mixture, pouring through the strainer to catch any leaves.
- Add a few limes and cilantro for garnish and sip!
