BBQ Sauce Chicken Brats are grilled and then slathered with barbecue sauce and topped with homemade pickled red onions and mustard. Delicious!
Want something different this Labor Day?
Maybe something other than traditional burgers and dogs?
Well, I found chicken brats at Whole Foods and while I paid a pretty penny for them, they were worth every cent. So extremely flavorful and juicy. I’m now a big fan and will drive the 50 minutes to the nearest Whole Foods to buy them. However, if you can’t find chicken brats, chicken sausages are just as delicious.
I like to serve these saucy brats in a soft roll topped with pickled red onion, spicy brown mustard and pickled jalapeños.
To Make These Grilled BBQ Sauce Chicken Brats:
- chicken brats – Or substitute with chicken sausage. My online order was short a package, hence why you only see 4 and not 8.
- bbq sauce – I used this recipe. However your favorite store-bought sauce is great as well.
- hotdog buns – I like to use hot dog buns, however sausage/brat rolls work fine too.
- pickled red onion – Lends sweet and tangy onion flavor. This is my go-to recipe!
- mustard – We like to use spicy brown mustard, but any will do.
- pickled jalapeños – Adds delicious spicy heat, however is optional. Have you made my homemade pickled jalapeños yet?
Preheat your grill to 350℉ to 400℃ (or 180℃ to 200℃).
I add the chicken sausages/brats to the grill (yes, while it’s preheating) and cook until fully cooked and no longer pink (if raw) – or about 12-15 minutes. If using precooked brats/sausages, grill until heated through and you start to getting grill marks.
The last 5 minutes or so I started brushing the chicken brats with barbecue sauce, turning them to get them sticky and caramelized.
Remove the brats and let them cool a smidge while you get the toppings and such together.
Nestle the saucy brats in a warm and soft bun, then top with pickled red onion and a zigzag of spicy brown mustard. So unbelievable and do I dare say I like chicken brats better?? I do!
This is unhinge your jaw goodness!
Spice up this Labor Day with these amazingly, saucy, zingy Barbecue Sauced Chicken Brats… you’ll be oh-so glad you did!
What Sides Go With Brats:
- baked beans – 5-ingredient barbecue bacon baked beans are in the photo.
- grilled sides
- pasta salad
- potato salad
- slaws or salad
