Air Fryer Edamame is simple and addictive! Frozen edamame is tossed with sesame oil, soy sauce and garlic and quickly air-fried. A healthy, complete plant protein snack or appetizer that’s high in fiber, rich in vitamins, minerals and and antioxidants! Serves 5.
I’m no stranger to soy beans (aka mukimame).
But I had my first experience with edamame (whole soy beans) earlier this year when I met my dear friend Kristen for sushi. Once it arrived to our table, my mouth was instantly salivating and I couldn’t seem to stop myself from eating them. They seemed fried, but I cannot be for certain, but they were SO delicious. Needless to say, I had to figure a way I could make these at home – and the air fryer seemed to be the easiest and healthiest way to achieve my goal.
In this recipe, frozen edamame is tossed with toasted sesame oil, low-sodium soy sauce and garlic powder and is then air-fried until heated through and the edges are golden brown. After transferring to a platter and sprinkling with coarse salt (the saltier the edamame the better in my opinion) I immediately started snacking.
Now I always have edamame on hand for when I’m craving a salty snack. It’s SO GOOD!
To Make These Air Fryer Edamame You Will Need:
- frozen edamame – You want to look for shell-on and whole edamame and not edamame beans (or mukimame or shelled soy beans).
- toasted sesame oil – Gives the edamame a toasty warm flavor.
- low-sodium soy sauce – Can substitute with low-sodium tamari.
- garlic powder – Adds flavor that’s sweeter yet milder than fresh garlic.
- fine sea salt – Enhances the flavors of this recipe.
- flaky salt – Adds extra salty flavor and texture. For serving.
Preheat your air fryer to 390°F (or 190°C).
Add 20 ounces of frozen edamame into a bowl.
Pour in 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil.
And 2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce.
Lastly season with 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder and 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt.
Toss well to coat.
Transfer the edamame to the basket of your air fryer.
And air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, tossing or shaking the basket halfway through.
Transfer to a platter.
And season with coarse flakey salt.
How D0 You Eat Edamame?
It’s not overly complicated, all you do is put the edamame pod partially in your mouth with the first soybean behind your front teeth and then pull, easing the bean out of the pod. Then repeat.
What Is Air Frying?
- An air fryer is a counter top appliance that requires less oil (anything from a few spritz to 1 tablespoon) yet produces crispy food that rivals most deep fried foods. By using circulating hot air, it moves at a high speed so the food tends to cook in a fraction of the time.
- There are a bunch of different makes and models of air fryers. My husband did the research (as he’s known to do) and found this air fryer [affiliate] to be one of the best. I recently bought a new one and is linked in the recipe printable. Both are great options but do your research and purchase one that fits your lifestyle.
How is Air Frying Healthier?
- Air frying is healthier because only a thin layer of oil coats the food and when the hot air comes in contact it will crisp. Saving you a ton of fat and calories (without sacrificing any flavor!) because food is not being submerged in a vat of hot oil.
- Keep in mind, not all air fryers are equal. Some preheat and some do not. Some are smaller than others therefore you may need to work in smaller batches to air fry.
