Need to know how to roast and skin hazelnuts? Well, this is the post for you! I will walk you step-by-step through the whole process!
Roasted hazelnuts are the bomb.
And I just know you have lain awake at night wondering how you can roast them, skin them and fold them into cookies, granola or biscotti?! Pssshhht I know I have. {It’s good to know I’m not alone!}
This here is the post where the mystery of how to skin those little nuts unfolds, step-by-step… right before your very eyes!!! Okay, so you guys… it’s really ridiculously easy. Roast, shake in a towel.. blah blah. But in the past I might have shied away from a recipe that requires roasting and skinning nuts unless I could see just how it was suppose to look like. Truthfully I would need to see it before my eyes to know I wouldn’t screw it up.
Roasting hazelnuts are 100 times better than regular un-roasted hazelnuts. Something about toasting them brings out their inner-nuttiness and turns them into something special. BTW I can so pop these suckers like candy.
So go grab your ah, err {hazel}nuts… for roasted hazelnuts will change your life. forever.
To start you’ll need hazelnuts, a sheet pan, a clean kitchen towel and an oven. Preheated to 350 degrees.
Pour the nuts out onto the rimmed sheet pan.
Spread them out evenly and pop the pan into your preheated oven and roast for 4 minutes.
After the first 4 minutes, you can see the skin starting to crackle and peel. It’s something to do with water evaporation and nut shrinking {don’t laugh}.
Toss them around and pop them back into the oven for 4 more minutes. Of course you could just shake the pan and not dirty a spatula.
Repeat this stem 2 to 3 more times until the nuts are fragrant.
Pour the nuts in the center of your clean kitchen towel.
Twist them up and shake them with some pizzazz (truly wish I had a video of me doing this, not) so the nuts rub against each other, removing their skin.
It’s really that easy.
Handpick the nuts out of the towel, don’t worry about the little skin-dust and just leave the flaky skin behind.
That’s all folks! Now you know how to roast and skin hazelnuts. Easy right?
Store them in an airtight container, I like to refrigerate mine so they don’t go all rancid on me. They should last for a couple of months! Hmmm now what should I make with these?

Good info. I hadn’t eaten hazelnuts until I married – my husband’s family uses hazelnuts in a lot of recipes.
