Naughty Coal Cookies

What do you think Santa would say if I was to leave him a plate of coal cookies?

Do you think he have a sense of humor? That he would get out one good ho-ho-ho, take a bite (falls in love) and then poof! he drops an iPad for me under the tree?! 

However on a serious note, these cookies are all kinds of fun. Like a boatload more fun than getting real coal in your stocking but not as fun as silly putty, orange flavored chapstick and a Teen Bop magazine.

With exception of that chocolate chip in the top cookie, I think I achieved a coal looking cookie. To get these coal cookies so black I just slid them into a 500° oven and then burnt the heck out of them. Just kidding! If you want to see the magic unfold before your very eyes you’ll need to start scrolling.

Let’s do this.


First, grab the usual ingredients; 2 eggs, 2 sticks of unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon baking SODA  (not powder! that was an accident) 1 cup granulated sugar, 3/4 cup dark brown sugar, 1-1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, 1-1/4 cup black cocoa powder and 1-1/2 cups chocolate chips.


Then take a moment to appreciate deeply dark black cocoa powder is!

What is black cocoa powder? It’s actually the same cocoa used in Oreo cookies. 


Add the cocoa to the bowl with the flour…


Add in the teaspoon of baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon of salt, whisk to combine and scoot it off to the side.


Now comes the fun part; throw the butter and sugars into the bowl of your stand mixer. Next, mix on medium-low until light and fluffy. With that being said, this cookie dough ends up being pretty dense so a hand mixer might not be able to do the job.



Then, with the mixer on low add one egg at a time, mixing well after each addition.


Then scrape down the sides.


Next gradually add in the dry ingredients.


Then, continue to mix, pausing to scrape down the sides of the bowl.


Next, drop in the chocolate chips. For this recipe, I’m using bittersweet 60% cacao and slowly mix them in.



Now you’re ready to make some coal.


Next, using a 2-tablespoon scoop to measure out 12 of the coal-dough-balls. Then slide the pan into a 400° oven for 6-8 minutes.

Bam. Coal. (the color is a leeeetle disturbing.)

Yes these extremely black cookies are edible. Just because they look just. like. coal doesn’t mean they taste like coal. Only a gazillion times better because, chocolate!

Naughty Coal Cookies

Naughty Coal Cookies
Deep, dark chocolate cookies that look like lumps of coal!
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 25 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes


  • 1-1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/4 cups black cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 kosher salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1-1/2 cups chocolate chips (pick your favorite)


  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. And line a rimmed sheet pan with a silicon liner or parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt, then set off to the side.
  3. In the bowl of your stand mixer add butter and sugars, mix on low to medium-low until combined. Add one egg at a time and mix after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl before gradually adding the dry ingredients. Mix until thoroughly combined. Add in the chocolate chips and mix until incorporated.
  4. Using a 2-tablespoon scoop, place rounded dough onto prepared sheet pan. Bake in preheated oven for 6-8 minutes. If still soft after 8 minutes, bake for 1 minute increments.
  5. Allow cookies to cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

    These look awesome! I’ve got two nephews to try these on. =)

    One other recipe I’ve seen said that adding dark purple food coloring (from cake decorating) to cocoa will give you a black color. There’s another option you can try.

    Amazing!!!! The same dark cocoa as Oreos—-now that is a recommendation! I can’t believe how dark these did turn out.
    In fact I am laughing. I love it!!!!

    These were perfect! I made them yesterday and the only sub I had to make was using Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa powder since I couldn’t find the Black Cocoa powder. They turned out FANTASTIC!! The batter was delicious and the cookies were so black and tasted like chewy oreos- thanks for sharing such a fun recipe!!

    But really, way, way too many photos. Just a couple would have been enough. Put the smartphone down and step away from it. Like most food bloggers, you have no self-control with the ,camera function. There seems to be some sort of underground competition among you all to see who can embed the highest number of just average, pointless photos in a post.

    I made these and they were awesome!! I subbed out the dark chocolate chips for Andes mint chocolate chips. They tasted like a chewy thin mint. A real crowd pleaser!! Thanks for the recipe.
